Sportmix dog food and cat food were recalled after 28 dogs reportedly died and eight more got sick after consuming high amounts of aflatoxin that was traced back to Sportmix dog food, according to an alert by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Certain Sportmix dog food products, manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, were voluntarily recalled by the company on Dec. 30, 2020, along with some cat food products. This product recall includes:

  • Sportmix Energy Plus, 50 lb. bag
  • Sportmix Energy Plus, 44 lb. bag
  • Sportmix Premium High Energy, 50 lb. bag
  • Sportmix Premium High Energy, 44 lb. bag
  • Sportmix Original Cat, 31 lb. bag
  • Sportmix Original Cat, 15 lb. bag

Only particular lots were affected by the recall. The list can be found here.

The FDA noted that this is an ongoing investigation and that the “scope of the recall may expand as new information becomes available.”

Sportmix Dog Food Recall

Certain Sportmix pet foods were recalled by the manufacturer, Midwestern Pet Food, Inc., after 28 dogs reportedly died and some became sick from eating Sportmix food with high levels of aflatoxin.

The FDA launched an investigation alongside the Missouri Department of Agriculture (and with the cooperation of Midwestern Pet Foods) to determine whether other products besides those included in the recall also contain high levels of aflatoxin.

Along with four Sportmix dog foods, two Sportmix cat foods were also recalled due to potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin.

What is Aflatoxin?

Aflatoxins are poisonous substances that come from certain kinds of naturally occurring fungi and have been associated with liver cancer and other serious health consequences in both humans and animals.

The FDA advises pet owners to contact a veterinarian immediately if their pet is showing symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning. These symptoms can include:

  • Sluggishness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellow tint to the eyes, gums, or skin from liver damage)
  • Diarrhea

In the most severe cases, aflatoxin poisoning can lead to long-term liver issues or even death. It is important to note that some pets may even reach the point of liver damage without showing visible symptoms.

Is Sportmix Dog Food Dangerous for Humans to Handle?

The FDA says there is no evidence of aflatoxin poisoning risk for pet owners who have handled the Sportmix food, but it does advise pet owners to always wash their hands after handling any pet food.

While aflatoxin can sometimes make its way into food consumed by humans, the risk is greater for pets, because they generally eat the same type of food every day over a long period of time. While a human that eats food with aflatoxin one day would likely eat something different the next, a pet consuming the toxin over and over may end up with the toxin accumulating, leading to aflatoxin poisoning.
