A Missouri man says that various Degree deodorant sprays cause the yellow and white marks and stains manufacturer Unilever claims they fight, in a class action lawsuit that was moved to Missouri federal court Tuesday.

Lead plaintiff, Drew Huskey, alleges that Conopco, Inc, commonly known as Unilever, falsely advertises its Degree-branded, MotionSense, UltraClear Black + White, and DrySpray men’s antiperspirant sprays. He wants to represent other consumers who were allegedly duped by Unilever’s mismarketing of the products.

Huskey claims that he relied on statements that the Degree deodorant sprays were “anti yellow stains” and “anti-white marks” when making his antiperspirant purchases. Despite these marketing claims, he says that the product still caused stains and marks on his clothes due to an ingredient in the deodorant formula.

The plaintiff alleges that Unilever touts a formula that “helps to reduce white marks on dark clothes and yellow ones on white”; however, the formula Unilever uses to make Degree deodorant sprays contains an ingredient, aluminum chloralhydrate, that causes and creates these white and yellow marks, says the class action lawsuit.

Unilever knew or should have known through testing that the aluminum chloralhydrate included in its Degree-branded deodorant sprays would cause stains and marks through product testing, alleges the class action lawsuit.

Huskey claims that he and other consumers would not have purchased or paid as much for Degree deodorant sprays had they known that the products would cause the stains they purport to fight. He points out that there are “legitimate anti-stan and anti-white-mark deodorant sprays” that he and other consumers could have purchased.

“A normal consumer is unable to determine simply by reading the claims on the Product packaging and/or the Product’s ingredient list that it actually contains nothing that ‘helps to reduce’ or otherwise is ‘anti’ to white marks and yellow stains,” alleges the class action lawsuit.

The plaintiff accuses Unilever of falsely advertising Degree deodorant sprays, as well as breach of warranty, breach of implied contract, and unjust enrichment.

Huskey wants to represent consumers nationwide who purchased any one of the following Degree deodorant sprays for men, along with a subclass of Missouri residents:

  • MotionSense
  • UltraClear Black + White
  • DrySpray

The class action lawsuit wants Unilever to pay Huskey and other Class Members the cost of the premium they paid for the allegedly falsely advertised Degree deodorant sprays.

I’ve wasted money on both Degree Motionscence and Ultraclear Black and White in aerosol and stick form because I trusted Degree. I used just regular Degree stick deodorant during puberty since that’s what my mom used and purchased for me. White stains weren’t a problem and wouldn’t clump up either. Degree has absolutely gone downhill since then. They trick consumers into buying a product with some special formula found only in these specific products when in actuality they’re not much different than the original Degree formula but still charge more because the label says it’s special.

I have had many many shirts ruined by this. Please add me as well.
