Consumers in Quebec who bought or own certain sizes of 2011 Apple MacBook Pro laptop may be eligible to make a claim in a $5,344,575 million class action settlement.

The Class is defined as all persons in Quebec who purchased and/or own a 2011 Apple MacBook Pro laptop with a 15- or 17-inch screen, as well as anyone who purchased in Quebec a 2011 MacBook Pro laptop with a 15- or 17-inch screen.

Plaintiffs filed their class action lawsuit in December 2014, alleging the 2011 Apple MacBook Pro laptops suffer from an issue or defect related to the computers’ graphics.

Tech giant Apple makes a wide range of electronic devices, from the iPhone and laptops to earbuds, smartwatches, and more.

A notice was sent July 2, 2021, to Class Members identified through Apple’s customer records. This notice will indicate the Class Member group they belong to and will give detailed instructions on what they need to do, if anything, in order to receive their compensation. The notice will also include login credentials claimants need to fill out online forms.

Direct Group

Members of the Direct Group, baked on Apple’s records, will receive up to $175 per MacBook Pro. This payment will be sent via check at the last address Apple has on file for you.

If Apple has the Direct Group member’s email address, but not their postal address, they will receive a different notice explaining how to receive their payment.

No further action is required on the part of the Class Member to receive their payment unless they wish to update their mailing address or receive their payment electronically.

To confirm or modify a mailing address, or to switch to an electronic payment, Class Members in this group may visit the settlement website and log in using the credentials on their notice.

Reimbursement Group

Class Members may file an additional claim for full reimbursement of the cost of their repairs under the Reimbursement Group if they paid for repairs to their 2011 MacBook Pro but were not reimbursed by Apple, subject to acceptance of the claim by the settlement administrator.

Those who wish to file a claim under this group must submit a Reimbursement Claim Form through the online claim portal.

Class Members filing this claim will have to attest that the graphics issue they experienced on the device happened before Jan. 1, 2017; that they paid for a repair, such as changing the logic board or graphics chip; that the repair was made due to a graphics issue affecting the laptop; and that they were not reimbursed for the repair.

In addition, the Class Member must submit a receipt for the repair with a date of Dec. 31, 2017, or before.

These claim forms must be filed by Oct. 1, 2021.

Remaining Group

And finally, Class Members may file a claim as part of the Remaining Group if they experienced a graphics issue with their covered Apple MacBook Pro before Jan. 1, 2017, subject to the claim’s acceptance by the administrator.

To be part of this group, the Class Member must not already be part of the Direct Group.

Those who wish to file as part of the Remaining Group must file their valid Remaining Claim Form by Oct. 1, 2021.

Class Members must attest that they owned one of the covered MacBook Pro laptops; that they experienced a graphics issue with it before Jan. 1, 2017; and that they are not part of the Direct Group (the Service Group nor the Complaint Group).

Funds distribution is set to begin Oct. 31, 2021.

The deadline to file a claim is Oct. 1, 2021.
