Canon All-in-One Printers Class Action Lawsuit Overview:
- Who: Canon USA is being sued by a printer customer.
- Why: The customer claims Canon All-in-One printers require needless ink in it in order to scan or fax documents, forcing consumers to buy unnecessary expensive printer cartridges.
- Where: The class action lawsuit seeks to represent a nationwide Class.
Canon sells an “all-in-one” printer, fax machine and scanner that won’t let users scan or fax unless they’ve loaded the machine with expensive ink cartridges, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Lead plaintiff David Leacraft filed the class action complaint against Canon USA, Inc on Oct. 12 in a New York federal court, alleging false advertising and breach of warranty.
Leacraft is bringing the action on behalf of all United States customers who bought a Canon “All- in-One” printer.
Low-Ink Disables Scan, Fax Features of Canon All-in-One Printers
He says, throughout its marketing and advertising, including on the product packaging, Canon claims the All-in-One Printers are multifunction devices that can print, copy, scan, and in some cases, fax documents.
“In truth, the All-in-One Printers do not scan or fax documents when the devices have low or empty ink cartridges, and Canon’s advertising claims are false, misleading, and reasonably likely to deceive the public,” the class action complaint reads.
The lawsuit alleges that Canon does not tell consumers that ink is a necessary component in order to scan or fax documents when they purchase the product.
“As a result, consumers are forced to incur unexpected and unnecessary burden and expense in the form of ink purchases or in the alternative be unable to scan or fax documents using the so-called all-in-one device.”
Leacraft, a New York resident, said he bought one of the all-in-one printers in March 2021, for its scanning purposes. However he was unable to scan without loading the machine with ink.
He’s suing under New York General Business Law and for breach of express warranty and unjust enrichment.
The plaintiff is looking to represent anyone who bought a Canon All-in-One Printer in the United States, plus a New York subclass.
Leacraft is seeking certification of the class action, damages, restitution, fees, costs and a jury trial.
In 2015, the company agreed to pay $930,000 in order to settle a class action lawsuit over allegations that Canon inkjet printers contain a print head defect which makes them inoperable.
Printer problems abound, with consumers lodging a class action lawsuit against Canon’s competitor this summer alleging that the HP “Instant Ink” subscription delivers faulty, error-prone cartridges.

I have had to purchase expensive color & Black ink cartridges for my Cannon 3200 series printer several times, as It won’t print if the black is full, and the color is low. Ink cartridges costing over $50 for both, and $27 for black, and more for the color one. I would like to be added to this suit.
Would like to be added if still
Possible.
This lawsuit should extend to the European Union too!
I just bought a new TS5355a for which its website doesn’t provide instructions till I chose a similar model.
I wanted to test its scanner and not insert its ink cartridges for now as they start drying as soon as opened. I was surprised to realize I couldn’t scan without ink! I was wondering, since when ink is needed to scan? I had access to a junk printer in the past without ink that worked just fine for scanning!
My TR8520 printer won’t scan if ink is running low. No way around this that I can find. Please add me.
My MX 922 is like that—I can’t scan, with an ink-out message. The MX922 should be included in your list, as well. It is hard to believe, also, the thing goes through cartridges of PGBK (photo-grade ink—the expensive one!), when NEVER printing on high resolution! I believe they programmed it to not use the regular black ink, when it should—that should be an addendum to the case (and should increase the settlement amount, considerably!! I was going through over $1000 of ink, a year! And that was just normal, light, home usage.
I would be more than happy to donate this MX922 Monstrosity, for testing purposes.
I would like to be added to this. Bought a new all in one canon printer….used it twice….i am now getting an error message. Unable to clear the error . The printer is now useless and I am out the $.
